How to export a Gemini chat to Markdown
Updated October 14, 2026 · 4 min read
Gemini is generous with exports, as long as the destination is another Google product. It will send a reply to Google Docs, draft it in Gmail, push a table to Sheets or code to Colab. What it will not do is export a Gemini chat to Markdown as a single file with your prompts and its answers in order. Three routes exist, and each one leaves something out.
Which method fits your case
| Method | What you get | Good for | Main limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share & export, then Docs | One reply as a Google Doc, downloadable as .md |
Polishing one answer into a document | One reply at a time, your prompts are not included |
| Google Takeout | Your Gemini Apps activity as an HTML file | A full backup | HTML, not Markdown, and everything at once |
| Markforge extension | The open conversation as one .md file |
Keeping a whole chat | One conversation per click, Chrome only |
Method 1: Share & export to Google Docs, then download as Markdown
Google's own path to Markdown goes through Docs.
- Below a Gemini reply, click Share & export.
- Choose Export to Docs. Gemini saves a new document in your Google Drive.
- Open the document, then File, Download, Markdown (.md).
Google's help page on exporting responses from Gemini Apps lists the other targets from the same menu: a Gmail draft, Sheets for a reply that contains a table, Colab and Replit for code.
Every one of them works on a single reply. A ten-turn conversation means ten documents, none of which contains what you asked. Workspace accounts add another variable: Google states that export options depend on your organization's settings.
Method 2: Google Takeout for the full history
Takeout is the bulk route. The steps below follow the University of Michigan's IT documentation, which is clearer than most on this point:
- Go to takeout.google.com and click Deselect all.
- Select the My Activity product.
- Open its activity options, deselect everything again, and keep only Gemini Apps.
- Create the export. Google emails you when the ZIP archive is ready.
The archive holds an HTML file containing your chat threads. One detail trips people up: the product you want is My Activity, not the top-level Gemini entry in the Takeout list.
As a backup, this is the right tool. As a way to pull one conversation into your notes, it means opening a large HTML page, finding the thread, and converting it yourself.
Method 3: export the open Gemini chat to Markdown with Markforge
Markforge is a free Chrome extension that converts the page in front of you to Markdown. It includes a parser written for Gemini's interface, which pairs each of your prompts with the reply that followed.
- Install Markforge from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open the conversation at
gemini.google.com/app. - On a long chat, scroll to the top so the earlier turns load.
- Click the Markforge icon, or press Alt+M.
- Edit the title or content if needed, then Copy or Download .md.
The parser removes the buttons under each reply and the inline citation markers Gemini inserts into its text. Conversion happens in the browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, and there is no account to create.
What the Markdown file looks like
---
title: "Trip budget for Lisbon"
source: "Gemini"
url: "https://gemini.google.com/app/your-conversation-id"
description: "Help me plan a four day trip to Lisbon on a tight budget"
---
# Trip budget for Lisbon
### User
Help me plan a four day trip to Lisbon on a tight budget
* * *
### Assistant
Four days is enough for the center and one day trip. A workable split:
Turns are labeled User and Assistant and separated by a horizontal rule. The frontmatter template is editable in the settings, and you can add fixed tags to every export with the Auto tags setting, for instance gemini or ai-chat.
Take a Gemini conversation to Claude or ChatGPT
A Markdown transcript is the simplest way to move a conversation to another assistant. Export it, paste it into the new chat, and ask the model to continue from the last message. The popup shows a token count for the transcript, which tells you roughly how much context it will take. It is computed with a GPT tokenizer, so read it as an estimate for other models. The full method is in how to move a conversation between assistants.
Limits worth knowing
- Scroll first on long chats. Gemini loads older messages as you scroll up. Markforge exports what the page holds at that moment.
- Tables are flattened. Version 1.0.0 does not rebuild Markdown tables: each cell lands on its own line. For a reply that is mostly a table, Export to Sheets from Gemini's own menu does a better job.
- One conversation per click. For everything at once, use Takeout.
- Generated images. Images in a reply are kept as image links. With image download turned on in the settings, Markforge tries to save them next to the Markdown file.
- Chrome only. No Firefox or Safari version today.

Frequently asked questions
Can Gemini export a chat as a Markdown file?
Not directly. Gemini's Share and export menu sends a single reply to Google Docs or to a Gmail draft. From Google Docs you can then download the document as Markdown, but that covers one reply, not the conversation.
How do I export my entire Gemini history?
Use Google Takeout. Deselect everything, pick My Activity, then keep only Gemini Apps in its options. Google emails you a ZIP archive containing an HTML file with your chat threads.
Does Markforge keep the citation markers Gemini adds?
No. The Gemini parser strips the inline citation markers from the reply text, so they do not end up scattered through your Markdown.
Why is the start of my long Gemini chat missing from the export?
Markforge converts the messages present in the page. Gemini loads older turns as you scroll up, so scroll to the top of the conversation, wait for it to load, and export again.
Can I export Gemini chats to Obsidian?
Yes. Set a folder inside your vault as Markforge's download folder and each export is written there as a Markdown note with YAML frontmatter that Obsidian reads as properties.
