How to export a Grok chat to Markdown
Updated October 14, 2026 · 3 min read
Grok has no menu entry that turns a conversation into a file. If you want to export a Grok chat to Markdown, with your prompts and Grok's answers in order, you need something that reads the conversation from the page. Grok's own tools stop short of that.
What Grok gives you natively
Two things, and neither is a Markdown export.
The copy icon under a reply copies that reply. It is fine for lifting one answer, and useless for a conversation of any length: one message per click, and your own prompts are not part of it.
The account data download lives in xAI's data controls. It is a portability feature, meant to hand you everything tied to your account at once. Third-party guides disagree on where the option sits, so look for the data or privacy section in your settings. Whatever the path, the output is an archive for machines, not a document you can read or paste into a note.
Grok also adds a technical obstacle that other assistants do not have. On a long conversation, it removes older messages from the page and reloads them when you scroll up. Select-all and copy only catches the part currently on screen.
Export the open Grok chat to Markdown with Markforge
Markforge is a free Chrome extension that converts the current page to Markdown, with a parser built for Grok.
- Install Markforge from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open the conversation on
grok.com. - Click the Markforge icon, or press Alt+M.
- Wait while the popup shows that it is extracting content. On a long chat this takes a few seconds.
- Review the preview, then click Copy or Download .md.
The pause in step 4 is the parser dealing with the unloading problem. It scrolls the conversation to the top, waits for the earlier messages to come back, repeats until nothing new appears, then reads the whole thing. You do not have to scroll manually.
The conversion runs in your browser. There is no account, and the conversation is not sent to a server.
What the Markdown file looks like

# Explaining orbital resonance
### User
Why do some moons of Jupiter orbit in a fixed ratio?

### Assistant
Io, Europa and Ganymede are locked in a 4:2:1 resonance:
Each turn carries a User or Assistant heading. Code in Grok's replies comes out as fenced code blocks. The frontmatter block is optional and its template can be edited in the settings.
Take a Grok conversation to another assistant
Once the chat is Markdown, it travels. Paste the transcript into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and ask the model to carry on from the last message. The token count in the Markforge popup gives a rough idea of how much context the transcript will use. If it runs long, delete the turns you no longer need in the content field before you copy. The full method is in how to move a conversation between assistants.
Limits worth knowing
- grok.com only. The Grok tab inside x.com is not supported.
- Role labels are inferred. Grok's markup does not always say who wrote a message. Check the labels in the preview on unusual conversations, and fix them in the editable content field if needed.
- Tables are flattened. Version 1.0.0 does not rebuild Markdown tables: each cell lands on its own line.
- Image generation pages are excluded. The parser skips Grok's Imagine section.
- One conversation per click, Chrome only.

Frequently asked questions
Does Grok have an export button?
Not for a single conversation. Grok lets you copy one reply at a time, and xAI provides an account-wide data download in its data controls. Neither gives you one conversation as a Markdown file.
Does this work for Grok inside X?
No. Markforge's Grok parser runs on grok.com. A conversation opened in the Grok tab of x.com is not recognized, so open it on grok.com before exporting.
Why does the export take a few seconds on long Grok chats?
Grok unloads older messages from the page as the conversation grows. Before converting, Markforge scrolls the conversation back to the top and waits for those messages to load, so the file contains the full exchange.
Are the User and Assistant labels always right?
Grok's page does not always mark who wrote a message, so the parser combines several signals such as layout and formatting. It is reliable on ordinary conversations. Skim the labels in the preview if a chat mixes long pasted text with short replies.
